What Beat Sync does

Beat Sync listens to your audio, finds the beats (the steady pulse you’d tap your foot to), and adds a small, quick zoom punch on each one. The picture snaps in a little and settles back, over and over, in time with the music. It’s the montage effect you see in workout reels, product edits, and highlight cuts — motion that lands on the beat instead of drifting.

What you need first

Beat Sync only works when there’s a beat to find:

Music or rhythmic audio — add a music file in the Sounds tab (chapter 31) or record over a track. A silent screen recording or plain narration has no beat to sync to.
A clear rhythm helps — a song with an obvious drum pulse gives cleaner, more reliable beats than a soft, beat-free background.

How to use Beat Sync

Open the Effects tab (right inspector).
Find the Beat Sync section.
Set the Sensitivity slider (see below).
Click Detect Beats. Zella analyzes the audio on your Mac and marks the beats — it shows a count like “24 beats” when it’s done.
Set the Punch slider for how strong each pulse looks.
Play it back — the zoom now pulses on the beat.

If you change the sensitivity, click Re-detect to find the beats again. Clear removes them.

The Sensitivity slider

What it does: it decides how many beats Zella catches. Turn it up and Zella marks more beats (even quieter ones); turn it down and it keeps only the strongest hits. If the effect feels too busy, lower it and re-detect; if it’s missing obvious beats, raise it.

The Punch slider

What it does: it sets how big each pulse is — how far the picture zooms in on every beat. A small Punch is a subtle heartbeat; a large Punch is a bold, snappy montage. This one updates live, so you can drag it while the video plays and watch the pulse grow or shrink.

Per-drum control (Advanced)

By default, one Sensitivity slider covers the whole track. When you turn on Advanced Tools (chapter 33), Beat Sync splits the beat into three drum types so you can react to just the part of the music you want:

Kick — the low, bass thump.
Snare — the mid punch, the body of the beat.
Hats — the high, ticking cymbals.

A selector lets you pick which drum type the Sensitivity slider edits, and each has its own sensitivity. Set a drum type’s sensitivity to 0 to ignore it. Every type above 0 is detected and combined, so you might sync only to the kick, or to the kick and snare together but not the hats. A “Reacting to:” line shows which drums are active.

Faint hats? Turning up Hats alone may find almost no beats — that’s correct, not a bug. Watch the beat count and lean on the drum type your track actually emphasizes.
