Add a slow push-in: scale from 100 percent to about 105 over the length of the shot. At that speed it is felt rather than seen, and a static frame stops looking frozen. On a Mac, Cinematic Move does the push and drift in one tap on any clip, and adds a backdrop drift when a background is applied; on iPhone you set a start and end scale on the clip, or let Smart Zooms place the push for you. The rule that matters is speed: if a viewer can see the move happening, it is too fast.
Point a camera at yourself, do not touch it for four minutes, and the resulting footage has a specific problem: nothing in the frame tells the viewer the video is still playing.
Why a static frame reads as broken
A real camera is never perfectly still. Even locked down on a tripod there is a small amount of life in the image: breathing, focus breathing, light shifting. A phone on a shelf recording a person who barely moves produces something closer to a photograph with sound.
Viewers do not consciously notice this, but they respond to it. A frame that has not changed in five seconds gets checked: is this loading, did it freeze, is this a still. That check is a half second of attention spent on your video's playback state instead of its content.

The fix is any movement at all, as long as it is slow enough not to become the subject.
The push-in
The default move, and the one that works on almost everything: scale up slowly over the shot.
Numbers that work. Start at 100 percent and end somewhere between 104 and 108 over the length of the shot. On a thirty second clip that is imperceptibly slow, which is the point. On a five second clip the same percentages become visible, so use less.
Why it works. Pushing in increases tension very slightly, which suits someone explaining something. It also reads as intent: a camera that is moving toward you is a camera operated by someone who cares.
Where the resolution goes. Scaling up crops. A 4K source scaled to 108 percent and exported at 1080p loses nothing, because you had pixels to spare. A 1080p source exported at 1080p and pushed to 108 percent is being upscaled by eight percent, which is survivable but real. Record with headroom if you plan to move.
Pull-outs and drifts
The pull-out starts tight and widens. It reads as release or reveal, which makes it good for endings and bad for openings, because it starts by hiding context you have not established yet.
The drift moves horizontally or vertically without scaling, a few percent over the shot. It is the subtlest of the three and the right choice when a push-in would crop something you need.
You can combine a push with a drift, and that combination is what most people mean by a cinematic move: the frame gets slightly closer and slightly off-centre at the same time, which is what a handheld operator naturally does.
Doing it in one tap on a Mac
Zella has Cinematic Move in the editor sidebar. It applies a slow push-in and drift, the impossible-dolly shot, and it works on any clip. If you have a background applied, you also drift across the backdrop, so the subject and the scene behind them move at different rates and the composite gains a bit of depth.

Where a move should NOT go
On footage that already moves. A handheld shot or a moving subject already has life. Adding a push on top gives you two motions arguing.
On text-heavy frames. A slow push across a screen recording with code or small UI text makes the text swim. Zooming to a region and holding is the right tool there. Screen content wants either a locked frame or a deliberate zoom to a specific region, which is a different tool.
On every clip. If four consecutive shots all push in, the technique becomes visible and the video starts to feel like it is breathing at you. Alternate: push, static, push, drift.
The speed rule
This is the only rule that really matters, and everything above is a consequence of it.
If a viewer can see the move happening, it is too fast.
A camera move in this context is not an effect. It is the difference between a photograph and a shot. The moment it becomes noticeable it stops doing its job and starts being a thing you did, which is a much higher bar to clear.
When in doubt, halve the amount and double the duration.
