Silence remover · Mac and iPhone

How to remove silences from a video automatically

Dead air is the first thing that makes people swipe away. Removing it by hand means scrubbing the waveform for every pause, cutting twice and closing the gap, dozens of times per video.

Zella listens to the audio, lists the silences it found, for example Silence · 2.6s, and removes them with every gap closed. Cuts land on a frame and respect word edges, and captions slide along with the edit so they stay on the right words.

Quick answer

To remove silences from a video automatically, click Cut Empty Space in Zella on the Mac or tap Clean Up on iPhone: Zella finds the silent gaps in your audio and ripple-deletes them, so the video gets shorter without clipping words. A rambling 49-second take usually comes out at about 29 seconds. It is free on every tier, runs on your device and undoes in one step.

  1. Step 1: Open your clip in the editor

Record or import the take. Any clip with speech and pauses will do.

  2. Step 2: Mac: click Cut Empty Space

In the left sidebar, open Auto Tools and click Cut Empty Space. Zella lists each silence it will cut, then removes them all and closes the gaps.

  3. Step 3: iPhone: tap Clean Up

Clean Up removes silences and filler words in a single pass, from the on-device transcript, and leaves everything else untouched.

  4. Step 4: Preview and tune

On the Mac, preview before you apply and adjust the silence threshold (how quiet counts as silence) and the padding kept around each cut, so a soft word start is never clipped.

  5. Step 5: Undo if it cut too much

A cleanup is a normal edit. Press Command-Z on the Mac or Undo on iPhone, change the setting and run it again.

Word-safe cuts

Cuts land exactly on a frame and keep a little padding around speech, so words are not chopped at the start or the end.

Everything else follows

Captions and other timed items slide earlier with the shorter timeline, and the new joins are ready for Auto-Transitions to blend if you want them softened.

Private and free

The audio analysis runs on your Mac or iPhone. Nothing is uploaded, and silence removal is free on every tier with no watermark.

  • macOS 14 Sonoma or later (Apple Silicon or Intel), or iPhone on iOS 18 or later
  • A clip with an audio track
  • Free on every tier: no watermark, exports up to 2 minutes at 1080p
  • Zella Pro ($89 once, Mac and iPhone) only if the finished video runs longer than 2 minutes
Will removing silences cut off my words?

No. The cuts respect word edges, keep a little padding around speech and land exactly on a frame. On the Mac you can raise the padding before you apply if you speak softly.

Can I remove silences on iPhone?

Yes. Clean Up removes silences and filler words in one tap, and Auto-Polish starts its full one-tap edit with the same silence removal.

Does it work if I do not speak English?

On the Mac, Cut Empty Space listens for quiet stretches in the audio, so a take in another language still gets its silences cut. Only the filler-word pass depends on English words.

Do my captions stay in sync after the cuts?

Yes. Captions and other timed items move with the timeline, so they stay on the words they belong to.

Is there a limit on video length?

There is no limit on what you can clean up. The free tier exports up to 2 minutes at up to 1080p with no watermark, and Zella Pro removes the length cap.
