To change a video's volume on iPhone, open it in an editor that supports per-clip gain, select the clip you want to change, and move its volume slider: 100% is the original level, 0% mutes it, and up to 200% boosts a take that was recorded too quietly. The important part is doing it per clip - turning the whole timeline down to tame one loud section makes everything else too quiet.

What the built-in iPhone apps can and cannot do

Worth knowing before you install anything, because two of the four things people mean by "volume" are already on your phone.

The Photos app: mute, and that's it. Open a video, tap Edit, and there is a small speaker icon in the top-left corner of the editing view. Tapping it silences the entire clip; tapping it again brings the audio back. There is no level, no fade, no way to quiet one half. Photos edits are non-destructive, so Revert always brings the original back - which also means Photos is a safe place to test whether the audio is the problem at all.

How to change video volume on iPhone without a subscription

The side buttons and Control Center: playback only. They change how loud your phone plays the file. They change nothing inside it. If your preview sounded fine and your export sounds wrong, this is almost always what happened.

Settings > Camera: no microphone gain. iOS does not expose a recording level anywhere. The camera records at whatever the microphone hands it, which is why the fix for a quiet take happens after the fact, in an editor.

iMovie: per-clip volume, but no automatic ducking. Select a clip on the timeline, tap the speaker icon in the inspector, and you get a volume slider plus fade handles. That covers the basics. What it does not give you is a music bed that ducks under your voice on its own, or a level for a second overlay layer, because iMovie for iOS allows only one overlay at a time.

"Volume" means four different things

Most frustration with phone audio comes from adjusting the wrong one:

  1. Clip volume - the level of one piece of footage on your timeline. This is what you want when one take was recorded closer to the mic than another.
  2. Overlay volume - a picture-in-picture layer has its own audio. Usually you want it muted (you only wanted the visual) or well under your voice.
  3. Music volume - the bed under everything, which should sit far below speech and duck automatically when you talk.
  4. Playback volume - your phone's side buttons, which change nothing in the file.

If your export sounds wrong but your preview sounded fine, it's almost always #4 masking #1.

Step by step

1. Get the clip on a timeline. Import from Photos or record straight into the editor.

2. Select the clip you want to change. Per-clip means exactly that - tap the specific clip, not the timeline background.

3. Open the audio controls and set the level. Aim for consistency across clips rather than a specific number: your voice should feel the same loudness from cut to cut. If you can only fix one thing about your audio, fix this one.

4. Handle overlays separately. A picture-in-picture clip usually brings audio you didn't ask for. Mute it, or set it low enough to be texture rather than competition. If both cameras recorded the same voice, leaving both up gives you a hollow, phasey double.

5. Add music last, and let it duck. A music bed should sit around 15-25% of your voice level, and drop further while you're actually speaking. Auto-Duck does this for you; doing it by hand means keyframing every sentence.

6. Export and listen on the target device. Phone speakers hide a lot. Check on headphones and, if you can, on a laptop speaker - that's what most of your audience will use.

Boosting a quiet take, and the arithmetic of its limit

Pushing a clip above 100% amplifies everything, and the numbers are unforgiving: doubling the amplitude is exactly +6 dB, and it is +6 dB on your voice, the fridge, the traffic and the air conditioning alike. The signal-to-noise ratio does not move at all. That is why a boosted quiet take usually sounds worse rather than louder - you hear the room arrive.

The better order of operations is:

  1. Remove noise first. A spectral denoiser learns the steady-state hiss and subtracts it, which genuinely improves the ratio rather than scaling it.
  2. Normalize loudness second. Targeting broadcast loudness (around -14 LUFS integrated) raises the voice to a known level instead of a guessed one.
  3. Set clip volume last, and only to balance one clip against another.

There is a second reason not to brute-force loudness: TikTok, Instagram and YouTube all normalise playback loudness on their side. A mix that is simply louder gets turned back down on the way in. What survives that process is clarity, not level.

Two more things that quietly ruin phone audio

Clicks at cut points. Cutting through the middle of a waveform leaves a step in the signal, and a step is a click. Most editors put a two or three frame fade on every cut for this reason; if you hear a tick on a hard cut, that is what it is.

Recording through AirPods. When a Bluetooth headset's microphone is active, iOS switches that headset into a call-oriented mode, and the mic is tuned for intelligibility on a phone call, not for voice-over. If a take sounds thin and papery no matter what you do with the volume, check what recorded it. The iPhone's own microphones are better for this than almost any wireless earbud.

The recording-side fix that beats any slider

Loudness falls off with distance, so the cheapest gain in the world is moving closer. Halving the distance between your mouth and the microphone is worth roughly +6 dB of voice - the same as the maximum boost most editors offer - except that it does not bring the room up with it. Room reflections stay where they were, so you get the gain and a better ratio at the same time.

That is the whole trick behind why phone audio recorded at arm's length sounds fine and phone audio recorded across a room does not.

FAQ

Can I mute just one clip and keep the rest? Yes - that's the point of per-clip volume. Mute the clip with the bad audio and everything else keeps its level. In the Photos app you cannot: its speaker toggle applies to the whole video.

Can I change the volume of just part of a clip? Split the clip at the point where you want the change, then set each part's volume separately. That's the reliable approach on a phone.

Why is my music drowning out my voice? It's probably sitting at a fixed level. Use Auto-Duck so the bed dips automatically while you speak and swells back in the gaps.

Does changing volume re-encode my video? Only the audio is affected, and only when you export. The original file on your phone is never modified.

Why is one of my clips much quieter than the others? Usually distance from the microphone, sometimes a different mic entirely (a headset on one take, the phone on another). Denoise and normalise that clip rather than pushing its gain to 200%.
