People blame the cutout. They spend an hour on edge quality and the result still looks like a person pasted onto a photograph, because the problem was never the edge.

Why composites look fake

Your brain judges whether two things are in the same place using light, not outlines. Specifically:

Direction. If the background has a window on the left and your face is lit from the right, the composite is wrong in a way that is instantly readable even though nobody could tell you why.

The same video frame before and after a colour grade is applied.

Colour temperature. A warm room recording placed on a cool blue office background gives you a warm person in a cool room. Real objects take on the colour of the light around them.

Contact. Objects in a space touch something. A subject with no shadow anywhere is not standing in a room, they are floating in front of an image.

Edge quality matters, but it is the fourth thing on this list, and it is the only one most people work on. Why video background removal looks bad when you move covers the edge side; this is the rest.

Fix one: a rim of light

Look at any photograph of a person in front of a bright window. There is a soft edge of light along their shoulder and hair, on the side facing the light. It is called a rim or backlight, and its absence is one of the loudest fake signals there is.

Adding a soft halo of light behind the subject, biased toward wherever the new background is brightest, does an amount of work that is out of proportion to how simple it is. The subject stops being a shape on top of a picture and starts being a shape lit by that picture.

Keep it soft and keep it dim. A hard bright outline is the other failure mode, and it reads as a sticker with a glow filter. If you can see it as a distinct band, come down.

Fix two: a contact shadow

The second cue is grounding. Even a person standing in an open space casts something: a soft darkening below and behind them.

A contact shadow does not need to be geometrically correct. It needs to exist. A subtle darkening under and slightly behind the subject is enough to tell the brain that this person is in this space rather than in front of it.

Without it, the tell is very specific: the subject appears to hover slightly, and the composite reads as a video call background.

Doing both in one tap on a Mac

Fix three: match the grade

The one you do by hand, and the one with the largest effect on a bad match.

Look at your new background and ask two questions. Is it warm or cool? Is it bright or moody? Then move your own footage a small distance in that direction: warm the face slightly for a warm room, cool it slightly for a blue-toned office, lift or lower the exposure to sit in the same range.

Choosing a background that is easy to match

Most of this gets easier if you pick well:

Prefer blurred to sharp. A blurred background has no fine detail to contradict your edges, and blur reads as depth of field, which implies a camera, which implies a real space. This is why blurring the background so often looks better than replacing it.

Prefer soft even lighting. A background with one dramatic light source demands that your lighting match it. A softly lit room does not.

Avoid a strong horizon line behind your head. A hard edge crossing your shoulders draws the eye straight to the cutout.

The order that works

  1. Remove or replace the background
  2. Add the rim light and contact shadow
  3. Match the grade
  4. Only then look at edges

Doing it in that order usually means step four is much shorter than expected, because a well-lit, well-matched composite hides edge imperfections that were glaring when the light was wrong.
