Which resolution should you actually upload?
Higher than you need, within reason. YouTube allocates more bitrate to larger resolutions, so a 1440p upload of 1080p-quality footage often looks better than a 1080p upload of the same thing. That is a quirk of the encoder, not a myth.

The encoding settings that matter
YouTube publishes recommended upload encoding settings covering container, codec, frame rate and bitrate. The short version for anything you make yourself:
- MP4 container, H.264 video, AAC audio.
- Match the frame rate you shot at. Do not convert 30 to 60 hoping for smoothness; you get duplicated frames.
- Progressive, not interlaced.

Shorts are a different upload

Frame rate, and the one place it matters
Frame rate is the setting people change for the wrong reasons. The useful rules are short:
- Match what you recorded. A 30 fps recording exported at 60 fps does not become smoother; the encoder duplicates frames and the file gets bigger for nothing.
- 60 fps earns its place in motion - gameplay, fast screen scrolling, anything where individual frames carry information.
- 24 or 25 fps is a look, not a default. It reads as cinematic because film taught us it does, and it reads as juddery on a fast pan.
YouTube's recommended upload encoding settings list the bitrates that pair with each combination of resolution and frame rate. You do not need to memorise them; you need your editor to not throw the setting away on export.
Thumbnails are a separate size
The video is 16:9 and so is the thumbnail: 1280 x 720 is the working size. It is the one asset a viewer judges before the video has played a single frame, and it is worth more attention than the resolution debate above.
Where YouTube covers your frame
On Shorts, the right rail carries the like, comment and share buttons, and the bottom carries the title and channel name. Anything you need read has to avoid both. On long-form, the timeline and controls appear over the bottom of the frame whenever a viewer moves the mouse.
The practical rule: keep text out of the bottom quarter and off the right edge.
Common mistakes
- Upscaling 1080p footage to 4K before uploading. You get a larger file and the same detail. Upload what you actually recorded.
- Changing frame rate on export. 30 fps footage exported at 60 duplicates frames; it does not smooth anything.
- Judging quality in the first ten minutes. YouTube processes lower resolutions first, so a video legitimately looks soft until the higher option appears.
- Ignoring the thumbnail. It is 1280 x 720 and it decides whether any of the above mattered.
- Uploading a Short as a normal video. Shorts are a separate surface with their own length and shape rules; a 9:16 video over the limit becomes a regular upload.
