DaVinci Resolve is the strangest deal in software. Blackmagic Design describes it as "the world's only solution that combines editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics, audio post production and now photo editing all in one software tool".
The free version is not a crippled demo. Blackmagic's own page says it "works with virtually all 8-bit video formats at up to 60fps in resolutions as high as Ultra HD 3840 x 2160" (checked 2026). Free 4K export, no watermark, on Mac, Windows and Linux.
Zella is a much smaller idea: an on-device screen recorder and AI video editor for Mac, iPhone and iPad, built so that a recording becomes a finished, captioned, correctly-shaped video quickly. Weighing these two is weighing depth against speed, and the free 4K export is the biggest single fact in Resolve's favour.
DaVinci Resolve or Zella: the quick verdict
- Choose DaVinci Resolve if you want to learn a real post pipeline, you grade colour seriously, you need free 4K export, or you work on Windows or Linux as well as Mac.

What DaVinci Resolve is genuinely better at
Colour. Resolve is the industry colour tool and has been for years. Node-based grading, HDR, scopes, tracking. Zella has 25 colour looks on iOS and 28 on Mac, plus live luma scopes and Colour Match in the Pro depth toolset. That is a well-chosen set, not a grading suite.
Free 4K. The free version exports Ultra HD at up to 60fps with no watermark and no cost. Zella Free caps at 1080p and 2 minutes; 4K needs the one-time $89 Pro unlock. If free 4K is your requirement, Resolve wins and there is no argument to make.
Visual effects and audio post. Fusion for compositing and Fairlight for mixing are entire applications living inside Resolve. Zella has 16 blend modes, transitions and voice changers, which is not the same category.
Cross-platform. Mac, Windows and Linux, plus a free iPad app. Zella is Apple-only, and has nothing on Windows or Linux.
It scales to real productions. Multi-user collaboration, feature-length timelines, delivery formats. Zella is built for the length of a tutorial or a short.
What Resolve's capability costs you
Resolve's price is not money, it is time and machine. It is a large install, it wants a capable GPU, and the interface is organised into pages - Media, Cut, Edit, Fusion, Colour, Fairlight, Deliver - that reward learning and punish dabbling. That is a fair trade if editing is a craft you want. It is a poor trade if you need to publish a product demo before lunch.
