A callout that does not fit what it points at reads as sloppy no matter how good the rest of the edit is. Free-form resizing uses eight handles, four edges and four corners, and each one pins the opposite edge so the shape grows in the direction you drag rather than from its centre. Thin shapes matter as much as large ones: an underline is meant to be a few pixels tall, and a tool that enforces a minimum height quietly prevents the shape you actually want.

Callout libraries are usually judged on how many shapes they contain. In practice the count barely matters. What decides whether annotations look considered or amateurish is whether each shape can be made to fit the thing it refers to, and most of the frustration people have with annotation tools is really a resizing problem.
Why shape matters more than style
A box drawn around a button should be the size of the button. An underline under a word should be the length of the word. These sound obvious, and they are exactly what tools make difficult, usually in one of three ways:
- The shape resizes from its centre, so every drag moves it off the thing you were aiming at.
- Only the corners are draggable, so changing width alone means changing height too.
- A minimum size stops you making the shape genuinely thin.
Any one of these turns a ten-second job into a fiddly one, and the usual outcome is that people give up and leave the shape approximately right. Approximately right is what reads as sloppy.

The eight handles and what each one pins
Free-form resizing means eight grab points: one on each edge and one at each corner.
- Edge handles change one dimension. Drag the right edge and only the width changes.
- Corner handles change both at once, for when you are fitting a shape to a rectangular target like a dialog box.
The behaviour that makes this usable is what happens to the other side. Each handle pins the opposite edge. Drag the right edge and the left edge stays exactly where it is. That is what lets you align a shape's left side to the start of a word, then extend the right side to the end of it, without the first alignment drifting.
Resizing from the centre, which many tools do, breaks this. Every adjustment moves both edges, so aligning one side is impossible without a second corrective drag.
Making a deliberately thin shape
An underline is a few pixels tall. A progress-bar marker is thinner still. Tools that enforce a minimum height, usually to stop a shape being accidentally collapsed to nothing, make these impossible, and the workaround people find is to use a box and accept that it is too tall.
The right floor is low enough to permit a genuine line and high enough that a shape cannot vanish entirely. If you can drag a rectangle down to a hairline and it stays grabbable, the tool is doing this correctly.
The practical test: try to make an underline out of a box. If you can, thin shapes work. If it stops a third of the way down, they do not.
The controls that shape a callout
Sizing is one half. The rest is the properties panel, and a few of these are worth knowing because they are easy to miss:
- Entrance animation. How the shape arrives. A Draw On entrance suits marker-style shapes, which is why it is the default when you are highlighting text inside the footage, while a fade suits labels.
- Exit animation. How it leaves. Shapes that pop in and then vanish abruptly draw attention to their own disappearance.
- Fill colour, separately from border. A box that needs a tinted interior and one that needs only an outline are different shapes, and controlling them together forces a compromise.
- Opacity. The single most useful control for annotations over busy footage.
If a control you expect is not in the panel, it may genuinely not be exposed. The gap between what a model stores and what the interface lets you change is a common source of "why can I not set this", and it is worth checking the panel carefully before assuming the feature is missing.
A workflow that keeps shapes consistent
Consistency across a video matters more than any single shape being perfect.
- Build one shape properly. Size, colour, opacity and entrance, all set the way you want them.
- Duplicate it for every other annotation. Copying an existing shape carries its settings, so the fifth annotation matches the first.
- Resize the copies, do not restyle them. Position and size change per target. Colour and timing should not.
- Check them at playback speed. Shapes that look fine when parked on a paused frame often turn out to be on screen for well under a second.
- Watch once with the sound off. Annotation problems are much easier to see when the narration is not carrying you past them.
The reason restraint matters is well documented outside video: Nielsen Norman Group's findings on banner blindness show that people learn to ignore repeated decorated elements, and annotations that appear constantly train exactly that reflex.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my shape move when I try to resize it? The tool is likely resizing from the centre. Every drag moves both edges, so the shape appears to slide. A tool that pins the opposite edge does not do this.
How thin should an underline be? Around a tenth of the height of the text it sits under, with a floor of a few pixels so it stays visible at smaller export sizes.
Can I make a callout a perfect square? Drag a corner handle and match the numbers in the size fields if your tool shows them. Corner handles change both dimensions, which is what you want for a square target.
Should annotations have a border, a fill, or both? One or the other in almost every case. Both at once creates two competing edges and makes the shape look heavier than the thing it is annotating.
How many callouts is too many in one video? If two are on screen at once, that is usually one too many. Across a whole video, the limit is however many the viewer can still be bothered to read.
Do I need to re-time a callout after resizing it? Not usually, but check. Making a shape substantially longer means a Draw On entrance has further to travel, which can make the same duration feel slower.
