Two clips can each look completely fine on their own and look wrong the moment they are cut together. That is not a grading failure, it is a comparison problem, and it has a specific order of operations.

Why your eyes are not enough

Human vision adapts. Look at a warm image for twenty seconds and your perception of neutral shifts toward warm; the next image will look too blue even if it is correct.

This is why colourists work with scopes and why "it looked right last night" is such a common experience. Your eyes were calibrated to the last thing you looked at, and by morning they had reset.

The practical consequence: for the final call, measure. Use your eyes to decide what you want, and instruments to check whether you got it.

Grading assumes a colour space, and almost everything published to the web is Rec. 709, the ITU standard for HD video.

The order

Exposure, then white balance, then saturation.

That order matters and it is not stylistic. Exposure changes perceived colour temperature: brighten an image and it reads cooler, darken it and it reads warmer. So a white balance set before exposure will be wrong afterwards, and you will do it twice.

Saturation goes last because both of the earlier steps move it. A correctly exposed and balanced shot often needs no saturation change at all, which is a discovery you can only make in that order.

Step one: exposure

Pick one clip as the reference. Usually the one you have the most of, or the one that is already closest to right.

Match the other clip's mid-tones to it first, then check that the darkest and brightest parts are in a similar range. Do not chase an exact match on the highlights: two shots with genuinely different lighting will never have identical highlights, and forcing it flattens one of them.

On a luma scope, the mid-tone bulk of both clips should sit at roughly the same height. That is a more reliable read than looking at the two images.

Step two: white balance

Find something in each shot that should be neutral: a white wall, a grey desk, paper, the whites of eyes at a push.

Adjust temperature and tint until that thing is neutral in both. Temperature moves blue to orange, tint moves green to magenta, and skin tone problems are usually tint rather than temperature, which is the single most useful thing to know here.

If there is genuinely nothing neutral in the frame, skin is the fallback reference. Skin tones across every human being fall in a narrow band, and a face that reads green or magenta is wrong regardless of what the rest of the frame is doing.

Step three: saturation

Now, and only now, compare intensity. Bring the more saturated clip down rather than pushing the flatter one up: adding saturation exaggerates any remaining balance error, while removing it hides one.

Using Color Match

Two honest notes about any automatic match, including this one. It works best when the two shots are of similar content, because it is comparing distributions and two very different frames have very different distributions for legitimate reasons. And it gets you close rather than exact, so treat it as step zero and then check with the scopes rather than as the final answer.

The common cases

Two cameras. A phone and a proper camera will differ in both balance and contrast curve. Match exposure and balance; do not expect the curves to match, and consider a shared grade over both to unify them.

Stock footage against your own. Stock is usually brighter and more saturated. Pull it toward you, not the other way round. This is the single most common reason b-roll reads as borrowed.

The same camera, different times of day. Usually pure white balance, and usually a quick fix once you find something neutral.

The check that catches everything

Put the two clips next to each other on the timeline and play across the cut, repeatedly.

A mismatch you cannot see in a still image is often obvious in motion, because the cut is where the eye compares. If you can watch the join five times and not notice a shift, you are done, and no scope reading will improve on that result.
