Cropping a 16:9 recording to 9:16 afterwards throws away most of the frame and leaves you with a smaller image than you started with. Recording vertically from the start keeps full resolution inside the shape you are actually publishing. On a Mac, pick a vertical preset before you record so the capture writes a vertical file, and use a viewfinder that shows the slice being captured, so you can frame yourself inside it instead of guessing and discovering the problem in the edit. On an iPhone the same logic applies with less effort, because a phone held upright is already recording the shape you are publishing.
An iPhone held upright records vertical video without anyone thinking about it. On a desktop, nothing is that automatic: most Mac screen recorders assume you want a widescreen file, because for years that was the only thing anyone published. If your video is going to a vertical feed, that assumption costs you real image quality, and the cost is larger than most people expect.
What vertical means at record time versus export time
There are two moments where a video can become vertical, and they are not equivalent.
At export, you take a widescreen recording and crop it. The file is 16:9 and you keep a tall slice of the middle.

At capture, the recorder writes a vertical file from the start. Every pixel it records is inside the shape you intend to publish.
The second is better for one reason that has nothing to do with convenience: pixels you never recorded cannot be recovered, and pixels you crop away were recorded for nothing.
Why cropping later costs you resolution
Take a 1920 by 1080 recording and crop it to 9:16. The tall slice you keep is 1080 pixels high, so to preserve the shape it can only be about 608 pixels wide. To publish at a normal vertical size of 1080 by 1920, that slice has to be scaled up by nearly a factor of two in each direction.
Scaling up does not add detail. Text edges soften, fine lines pick up haloes, and compression has a harder time because the upscale has smoothed away the sharp boundaries it handles well. On a screen recording, where most of the frame is text and interface, this is very visible.
Recording vertically instead means the full sensor or full screen region maps into the vertical frame. Nothing is thrown away and nothing needs enlarging.
Recording vertical on a Mac
The important step happens before you press record.
- Choose the vertical preset first. Pick the vertical or 9:16 preset in the recorder before starting, not after. If the preset only changes the export shape, the recorder is still writing widescreen and you are back to cropping.
- Check what the preview is showing you. A preview that shows the full widescreen view while you record vertically is misleading, because you will frame yourself using the whole width and then discover half of it is outside the file.
- Frame with the edges in mind. Vertical is unforgiving horizontally. Anything you gesture towards needs to be close to your body.
- Record. The file that lands should already be vertical. Check its dimensions before you build an edit on top of it. Apple's own screen recording documentation is worth a look for what the built-in tools do and do not offer here, since QuickTime records the display or a rectangular selection of it rather than a preset aspect.
That last check is worth the five seconds. Discovering the aspect ratio was wrong after an hour of editing is a much more expensive mistake than discovering it immediately.
The viewfinder tells you what you are actually getting
A vertical viewfinder shows the slice that will end up in the file, rather than the full camera view with the crop implied. The difference matters most for the things people get wrong repeatedly: how much headroom there is, whether a gesture stays in frame, and whether a second person is actually in shot.
If your recorder does not show this, the workaround is to mark the edges physically. Two strips of tape on the display at the vertical boundaries is inelegant and works.
Mixing vertical and horizontal clips in one timeline
Most real projects end up with both, usually a vertical talking-head take and some widescreen screen capture or b-roll.
The two sane options:
- Fit the widescreen clip inside the vertical frame, leaving space above and below. Fill that space with a blurred copy of the clip itself, or with a solid colour that matches your video. This keeps the whole widescreen image visible.
- Crop the widescreen clip to the vertical frame, accepting the resolution cost on that clip only. Reasonable when the interesting part is genuinely in the middle.
Once the frame is right, an animated text highlight is a good fit for vertical, where there is height to spare and width to protect. What to avoid is a timeline that silently zooms a widescreen clip to fill the vertical frame. A large automatic zoom crops aggressively and inconsistently, and the result is a video where some clips are close-ups for no reason the viewer can see.
